"Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
"I want to see the victor... throw roses into the abyss and say: 'here is my thanks to the monster who didn't succeed in swallowing me alive'"
Friedrich Nietzsche
The Monster Untamed By Roses takes as it’s starting point the notion that sometimes in our life it can feel impossible to pull our gaze out of the abyss in time to stop the abyss taking hold of us when it gazes back. What if Nietzsche’s monster in the abyss does succeed in swallowing us alive? Among the threat and turmoil the piece has moments of frailty and a hope of being able to climb back out, even if we maybe can’t manage it at that particular time.
